The Welland Generals were unable to find the back of the net – let alone, an answer – when the question came down to winning.
They matched the visiting St. Catharines Spartans goal for goal over the opening two periods, but surrendered five unanswered goals in the final frame. The 10-5 setback in Sunday night junior B lacrosse action at Welland Arena was the Generals' fifth in a row following a promising 2-0 start to the year.
St. Catharines improved to 5-0 despite being outshot 47-41.
The Spartans enjoyed an edge on special teams going 3-for-12 on the power play and netting two shorthanded goals in the game.
Welland finished the game 1-for-12 on the power play and scored once while playing serving a penalty.
Jack Fitzgerald led the Generals in scoring with three goals and an assist. Cameron Phillips and Talon Badawey also scored, while Graeme McCullough went the distance between the pipes for Welland.
Trevor Hines and Chris Robertson, with two goals apiece; Cree Blakely, Zack Calder, Matt Moore, Jacob Schenk, Evan Scott and Alec Tamas accounted for the St. Catharines offence.
Quintan Martin made 42 saves for the win.
On Thursday Welland visits the 4-2 Niagara Thunderhawks in a 7:30 p.m. start in Niagara-on-the-Lake, and the Spartans host the 7-0 Six Nations Red Rebels at Merrittion Lions Arena starting at 8 p.m.
Next home game for the Generals is Saturday at 7 p.m. against the Wallaceburg Red Devils.
